Road and Cycle Safety

While the year 6 children have been doing Cycle Safety with the Christchurch City Council, the year 5s have been creating presentations on road safety. They are doing a web-quest that has seen them research and then design a web 2.0 tool for presentation. Check out the web-quest here.

Hanmer Springs Camp

         My Recount
Have you ever been tenting on a year 5/6 camp when you
could have been tenting on the first night? Well I have on
the year 5/6 Hamner Springs Camp.

The rain was lightly trickling down the side of the tent and onto the soggy ground. I and Ella were talking almost in a whisper. Then we heard Mr Lynch and Miss Miller’s voices through the darkness. All was silent for a moment.

On the first day of camp at 1:00 in the afternoon me and Hana
made pancakes. We were being supervised by Miss Love, a student teacher, and Mr Lynch. Some of the pancakes turned out
terrible and got burnt. Most of them were delicious. Group 5 did this activity for about 2 hours. Then it was three clock, time to switch activities.

On Wednesday the 2nd day of camp at 6:00 clock all the year 5/6’s went to Hamner Springs Pools. I went on the newest hydro slide with Mellissa. After that I went on with Hana. Later on I decided to go the slower hydroslide, with Mellissa. On the newest hydroslide you went round and round, and if you got stuck you had to wiggle. Afterwards I went in the lazy river, later on the hot pools, and finally the pools. At 8:00 clock we went back to camp.

On Thursday at 12:00 clock in the afternoon we went climbing.
Our two instructors were Nick and Ben they taught us what we   had to use, like a carbine. We also used a be-layer a rope and a ladder to get started. There were two trees to climb. The trees had two climbing walls on either side. The longer tree was the hardest. We were divided into two  different groups. We had to stack crates to see who could get the highest. Our record that had had to be beaten was 14. If your crates fell down you had to start again.

On Thursday night at 6:00 to 7:00 some of the year 5/6’s played
spotlight, we ended up improving the game by setting out better rules. It was like playing sleep up on granny in the dark.

We did a bush treasure hunt on Thursday, We had to find examples of a piece of bark shaped like a dog, a rock shaped like a boom a rang and so on. Then afterward we had to solve a riddle .It was not too hard. The bush treasure hunt was really fun.

On Friday we went home We had to walk three hours to get to Hammer Springs. When we had got there we had been exhausted. My mum came and picked up me Mitchell, Nathan, Myrna. It seemed like ages to get there on the way there but on the way back it seemed like no time at all.  I had a great time at camp I’m going to do it next year too.
