Constable Bush and Cyber Safety

This afternoon Constable Sue Bush spoke to us about cyber safety. Wow. Pretty interesting. Did  you know you have to be 13 to have a facebook page and anyone can see it!!? No one in Room 5 had a computer in their own bedroom. Never give out personal information on the internet and a chat room is like a big stadium where everyone can read your stuff. For more tips of internet safety she said to go to www.netsafe.org.nz .

Kiwi Sports Day

Today all of Wairakei had Kiwisport Fun Day. They got to try out 3 of the 4 sports, Aussie Rules, Basketball, Marching and Indoor Bowls.
Jonty said: "Personally what I would recommend is the Aussie Rules.
The marching was rather slow and we didnt' have anything like a marching game.
Overall I would recommend kiwisport as a fun to do, but would be better with more sports."

My favourite was basketball. It was absolutely brilliant because we did lots of cool games. Next time I would like to do indoor bowls."- Fiona

"I learnt to kick and pass a aussie rules ball and marching isn't just walking. It's about how you walk, line up and hand position. Basketball was the most fun sport. Next I'd like to do kiwisport dodgeball!" - Josephine.

"It was fun learning about AFL. You learn more when you listen."- Jack N.

"I liked basketball because of the fun tournaments. I'd like to do dodge ball next at kiwisport because it is popular at school." - Yuuta.

"I learnt that you had to have an efficient walk in Marching. We played some amusing games in basketball."- Sondos.

"I got an x on my hand for fair play and I got a treat. It was amazing how we learnt lots of new things in that short period of time." -Shardae

"I won a prize for working hard. I loved basketball. It was brilliant." - Grace.

"I did pretty good at Aussie Rules. I did a brilliant kick to Scott."

"...I won the best shooter and my team won at basketball."- Analeigha

" I enjoyed AFL and basket ball because they were quite easy to play. I think I'll work on my hoops."- Amanda.

"My favourite was AFl because you learnt to punch the ball but it hurt. Next I'd like to do dodgeball." - Max.

"We played a game called Octopus with the basketballs. I liked that game."

Homework week 4: Evaluating in the design Process

This week Room 5 are having to evaluate their switches they designed and then made. Evaluating is part of the design process.
Mr Lynch will have to evaluate his carefully, finding what the positives were and the negatives. One negative was the nails he used heated when the circuit was closed. Ouch! Back to the design stage for him we think.

Switches and the Design Process

Room 5 were set a task to design and make a switch for a circuit out of materials we had in the class. The will now evaluate their switch after testing it to work out the positive and negative  aspects of the design.

Rebekah, Grace and Lucy were the first to be successful with their paper clip switch.

Ben, Qwayan and Jack N used a paper clip and a nail design.

Sondos, Luca and Fiona's design relied on gravity for the switch to fall to close the circuit.
Christina and Shardae's design was simple but effective.

Mother's Day mosaics

Room5 have been making  Mother's Day cards with mosaic designs. Also we wrote either a small poem or some  wise words for our mums.
These are the steps we used. First we cut small squares of coloured card. Then we drew four designs on a piece of scrap paper. Then we folded A4 paper in half and drew our favourite design on it. Then we stuck mosaics over the picture to create the colour. We then opened the card and wrote either a small poem or a letter to our mums.    By Luca and Jonty.

Creative Sparks

Room 5 began working with the electrical equipment today. We created a variety of circuits and the boys dismantled a scanner, woofer and a CD/Radio. Here Fiona is finishing her nerve tester.

Above:Chris Yuuta and Max see to the sub-woofer.

Jack H and Qwayan explore the innards of a scanner.

Analeigha attached a wooden wheel to the motor as the base for a fan.
