A Family History by Jack Hugo
When my grandad was3 years old he remembers going on a train with his mother and baby sister to Lyttelton to say goodbye to his dad as he was going to fight the war in North Africa with hundreds of other soldiers.
His dad was away four years and Grandad went to a little country school. It was about a mile away and he had to walk as they didn't have a car or a bike. He had lots of jobs to do at home. He had to milk the cow each day and do the lawns and garden. There was no TV or playstations then.
At school each year they had a pets day. Grandad took a calf on a rope to school and it got away and all the kids had to chase after it. Finally the teacher caught it.
When he was 13 he had to bike 6 miles to high school in Ashburton. He was a good cricketer and soccer player. He left school at 16 and worked for a stock and station company, buying sheep and cattle for farmers.
Grandad liked old cars. The first one he bought cost $40 and it was a 1928 Austin 7 and here is a picture of it. He was 17 years old then and it took him 2 hours to drive the 50 miles from Ashburton to Christchurch.
